Backing 100 Future Scientists: How Delta Smoke Controls is Supporting STEM Education in Portsmouth

At Delta Smoke Controls, we believe great engineering starts with curiosity – and that curiosity needs to be nurtured early.

That’s why we’re proud to be supporting STEMunity’s “100 Future Scientists for Portsmouth 100” initiative during British Science Week, helping 105 Key Stage 2 (KS2) children access hands‑on science experiences they might otherwise miss.

Opening doors to science for Portsmouth pupils

STEMunity is a Portsmouth‑based charity led by educators who believe every young person deserves to feel confident, curious and capable in science. Their team has spent many years working in schools across the city, building trusted relationships with teachers and students and designing activities that make science feel relevant, creative and accessible.

Their vision is simple but powerful: to help young people see that science belongs to them and that they have a role to play in shaping their city’s future.

What is “100 Future Scientists for Portsmouth 100”?

100 Future Scientists is a hands‑on Science Week event for primary pupils from high‑EDI (equity, diversity and inclusion) schools across Portsmouth. During the event, children will:

  • Take part in exciting, practical experiments led by STEMunity educators and local STEM Ambassadors.

  • Meet real people working in science, engineering and technology in their own city.

  • Be encouraged to see themselves as scientists and problem‑solvers.

Each child also takes home their own experiment pack so learning – and family conversations about science – can continue beyond the event.

Why Delta Smoke Controls is getting involved

For us, supporting this initiative is about more than a one‑off event.

  • Investing in our people and their families – Many of our colleagues live in and around Portsmouth, and their children attend local schools. Helping to bring high‑quality STEM experiences into those classrooms is part of how we support the communities we work in.

  • Removing barriers to STEM – By backing a programme focused on high‑EDI schools, we’re helping to ensure that opportunities in science and engineering reach children who might otherwise be left out.

  • Building the future talent pipeline – Our sector depends on the next generation of scientists, engineers and technicians. Sparked interest at primary school can grow into future apprenticeships, degrees and careers in companies like ours.
