Southbank Place

Southbank place was a smoke control and smoke ventilation project worked on by Delta’s experienced team of smoke control experts.

The client was looking for the design and installation of a mechanical smoke extraction system for four of the tower blocks in this development as well as the underground car park.

Challenge

To develop a series of Smoke Control systems that would extract smoke from the stairwell areas in four of the high rise tower blocks in the event of a fire to enable safe evacuation as well as for the 215 space underground car park. These developments would need to fit into the schedule of a broad, busy and complex development.

Project

Southbank Place , London

Location

It was a very busy city centre location in central London.

Goal

To develop a set of Smoke Control systems that provide for an effective system for ventilation of smoke from the buildings to enable safe evacuation in the event of a fire and enable the client to meet their legal fire safety obligations.

Delta Response

The lead contractor called on Delta in the early stage of the development sharing architectural drawings and arranging direct liaison with the architecture firm. This enabled us to influence the building design to facilitate the safe ventilation of the buildings – building in core principles. The tower blocks have been designed to prevent smoke ingress into the main firefighting stairwells and with our bespoke smoke control system, we were able to manage air pressure and flow within the stairwells through to smoke ventilation out through the roof.

The car park and loading bay design incorporate both a smoke extract system and an air movement system for the dilution of carbon monoxide build-up.
