As Portsmouth prepares to host a leg of the Baton of Hope – the UK’s biggest suicide prevention initiative – on Friday, 26th September, our team at Delta Smoke Control is undertaking our own vital mission: preparing for Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA).
The Baton of Hope’s mission to inspire open conversations about mental health and inspire hope aligns perfectly with our core company value: protection. While we are known for designing and maintaining sophisticated smoke control systems that protect buildings and assets, our commitment to safety extends inwards to our most important asset—our team.
We firmly believe that to take the best possible care of our customers, we must first take the best possible care of our people. Their well-being, both physical and mental, is our greatest priority. A supported, healthy, and resilient team is a team that brings its best, most focused, and most compassionate self to work every single day. This is how we maintain the high standards of excellence you expect from us.
That’s why we are incredibly proud and excited to announce a significant investment in our team’s wellbeing: Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England training for 12 of our employees this November.
What is Mental Health First Aid Training (MHFA)?
Just as physical first aid is given to an injured person before professional medical help can be obtained, Mental Health First Aid is the initial support offered to someone experiencing a mental health issue or emotional distress.
The internationally recognised course, delivered by certified instructors, will equip our team members with the skills and confidence to:
- Spot the early signs of mental health issues.
- Listen non-judgmentally and hold supportive conversations.
- Reassure and guide a person towards appropriate professional help.
- Promote mental well-being and reduce stigma within our workplace.
This isn’t about turning our team into therapists; it’s about supporting and developing a network of empathetic, informed individuals who can recognise when a colleague might be struggling and offer a compassionate, initial point of contact.
The Ripple Effect: Why MHFA Training Benefits Everyone
Investing in this training is a clear statement of our values. It tells our team, “Your whole health matters to us.” By openly supporting mental well-being, we help to break down the stigma that often prevents people from speaking up and seeking help early.
This initiative benefits everyone:
- For Our Team: It creates a safer, more supportive, and understanding work environment where people feel seen, heard, and valued.
- For Our Company: It builds a stronger, more resilient, and collaborative workforce, reducing absenteeism and presenteeism while boosting morale and productivity.
- For Our Customers: When our team is mentally well and fully supported, they are more focused, engaged, and empathetic. This directly translates to the quality of service we provide. A team that feels cared for is inherently better equipped to care for you. Our commitment to your safety starts with our commitment to theirs.
This training cohort includes volunteers from every department across the company, ensuring this supportive network is woven into the fabric of our entire organisation.
We are committed to fostering a culture of care, support, and open conversation. This is just one of the steps we are taking to ensure Delta Smoke Control is not only a leader in life safety systems but also a leader in supporting its people.
