Delta Smoke Control has marked another milestone in its home-grown engineering programme, with Smoke Control Engineer Will Mortimer passing his AM2S End Point Assessment after completing an electrotechnical apprenticeship at City of Portsmouth College.
Will is the second engineer at the Portsmouth-based life-safety specialist — part of Delta Ventilation Group — to achieve AM2S certification in a matter of weeks, following colleague Josh Quantick’s Electrical Apprentice of the Year win back in May. Together, the two passes point to a deliberate strategy: building electrical competence in-house, one qualified engineer at a time.
What AM2S actually tests
AM2S is the hands-on End Point Assessment that every electrotechnical apprentice in the UK must pass under the current Apprenticeship Standard. It puts real electrical skill under the microscope — fault finding, testing, safe isolation and inspection to BS 7671 Wiring Regulations standard. For an engineer whose day job is the physical installation and commissioning of life-safety smoke control systems, it’s a core proof point of on-site electrical competence. Will trained through City of Portsmouth College, part of the city’s “One City, One College” further and higher education offer. The college’s Apprenticeship Liaison team works with local employers to bring apprentices through electrotechnical and building services qualifications — and Will’s pass is a tangible example of the Portsmouth-college-to-Portsmouth-employer pipeline that Delta continues to invest in.Why it matters for Gateway 2
Beyond the personal achievement, each AM2S pass strengthens Delta Smoke Control’s evidence base for individual electrical competence — now a formal expectation under the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Building Safety Regulator’s Gateway 2 regime. That regime requires evidence of both individual competence and organisational quality management for the electrical elements of life-safety systems. Set alongside Delta’s NICEIC accreditation, every additional AM2S-qualified engineer on site reinforces the dual-layer assurance the company brings to Gateway 2 schemes.In their words

As a Smoke Control Engineer, Will carries out on-site installation work across Delta Smoke Control’s smoke ventilation, mechanical pressurisation and smoke and heat exhaust projects — from residential and mixed-use developments through to commercial and high-risk buildings.
