Independent proof of competence: Delta’s service team achieves SMR certification

Delta Smoke Control’s maintenance division has been independently certified to service, maintain and repair life-safety smoke control systems.

Delta Smoke Control’s service and maintenance team has been independently certified under the IFC Certification Smoke Control Service, Maintenance & Repair (SMR) scheme.

The SMR scheme is a voluntary, third-party certification delivered by IFC Certification (IFCC), part of Kiwa UK and a UKAS-accredited certification body. To achieve it, Delta’s service team was assessed at both organisational and engineer level — covering technical competence, training, maintenance procedures and real on-site performance across the systems Delta maintains. Delta proved competence across every audited category: natural smoke ventilation and automatic opening vents (AOVs), mechanical smoke extract, stairwell pressurisation, car park smoke control, fire and smoke dampers and controls.

Certification is not a one-off tick. It is achieved through stringent, thorough audit criteria and maintained through ongoing annual surveillance audits, so the competence it evidences must be demonstrated year after year — not just on the day of assessment.

Why it matters

Since Grenfell, and under the Building Safety Act 2022 and the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, the people responsible for buildings are expected to prove, not assume, that life-safety systems are maintained by competent specialists. Smoke control systems only do their job, holding escape routes clear and buying people time, if they are serviced and maintained correctly and kept in good order. SMR certification gives building owners, responsible persons and specifiers documented, independent evidence that Delta’s service team are competent to do exactly that.

It also completes the picture. Delta already evidences competence at individual engineer level through its growing pipeline of AM2S-assessed engineers.

Delta has held IFC Certification under scheme SDI 19 for the design, installation and commissioning of smoke control systems since 2019 — certificate IFCC 3212, covering Categories 1 to 4, valid until 5 July 2029, Issue 4.

SMR extends that independent scrutiny across the full life cycle of a system – design, installation, commissioning, and now maintenance and repair – and means every stage is now covered by a certificate a client can look up.

Our engineers already put themselves through individual assessment; SMR holds our whole service operation to the same scrutiny and standards. For the building owners and responsible persons who rely on us, that is exactly the reassurance they should be asking every maintenance provider to prove.”
